Materials
A story familiar to the class. Basic vocabulary knowledge. Pictures in sequence that illustrate a story - such as copies from an illustrated book.
Procedures
1. If necessary, preteach vocabulary. The activity is designed to provide an opportunity to use words they have already studied in previous experience.
2. Depending on understanding of the vocabulary, familiarity with the story, and class needs, you might need to tell part or all of the story to the class. -- If the pictures are clear and direct enough, you don't need to do this.
3. For each picture, have students (ask and) answer some of the questions who, what, where, when, and why. Or, have them describe what they see in terms of -- Setting, Characters, and Plot.
4. After showing and talking about each picture, have students write a section of the story based on what they have seen and heard. The length of each section of the story will depend on the level of the students: perhaps only 1 or 2 sentences for Beginners or whole paragraphs for high intermediate and above.
Pair and Group Work allows for more communicative practice and peer-to-peer help for mixed-level classes.
Assessment: Participation, Written Text, Vocabulary Review
Variation: In step 3, you can mix the pictures out of sequence and have the students decide what the correct order should be.
