Circles and Sentences - Giving Opinions

Age: All

Level: High-beginning to Advanced

Language Skills: Speaking-Listening

Participation: Whole Class

Materials: Handout

Procedures:

Preparation - Draw circles on a sheet of paper - then - write sentences that can trigger a student's opinion - such as - "Pizza is the best food ever" or "Drama is the best genre of movies" or for more advanced students "The death penalty is immoral" - then - make a copy of the sheet for each student in the class.

In Class

1. Handout the sheets and have each student write Agree or Disagree under each sentence.

2. Each student should pick the circle they most disagree with and mark through it with an X.

3. Each student should pick the most interesting sentence that they agree with.

4. Have students walk around the room talking to other individual students about which circle they agreeed with most and which they Xed.

(If there isn't enough room in your class, students can talk to those closest too them - reporting what other students have told them as they go.)

5. After students have had enough time to interact as much as is useful for the class level, meet as a whole class.

Discuss which circle was most popular and which was least popular.

Assessment: Informal observation
