By The Way - Short Speaking Activity

Age: Any

Level: Beginning to Advanced

Language Skills: Speaking-Listening

Participation: Groups of 5-9

Materials: Any object

Procedures:

This is a short (5 minute) activity designed to give students a brief opportunity to use the whole language - anything they have learned in the past.

1. Write on the board: (Name), here's a _________. By the way...

2. Explain that each student in the group will take the object, pass it to another, and use the formula on the board. After "By the way", the speaker can say anything related or unrelated to the object. Give examples of unrelated sentences - like - "By the way, I did not eat breakfast this morning" or "By the way, I played video games yesterday."

Assessment: Informal observation

(The activity comes from The Standby Book - one in the series Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers.)
